What you're breathing
Cutting wood produces fine particulates and formaldehyde from the glue in plywood and MDF. Acrylic produces methyl methacrylate vapour. Leather produces a mix nobody has fully characterised. None of it belongs in your lungs, and the smell settles long before the risk does — a room can smell fine and still be full of sub-micron particulate.
The options, honestly ranked
- Ducted outside — best, cheapest, most effective. A short duct run with few bends and an inline fan sized for it. Every 90° bend costs you airflow, so measure before you buy.
- Filter unit with real activated carbon and a HEPA stage — good when ducting isn't possible (flats, rented space). Consumable cost is real; budget for filter replacement or it becomes an expensive fan.
- Open window — not extraction. It moves smell around the room.
Whichever you use
- Check it's running before each session, not after you notice the smell.
- Extraction pulls from where the smoke is, near the workpiece, not from across the room.
- Replace filters on schedule. A saturated carbon filter passes everything straight through and gives you a false sense of safety.
