Materials & settings

Power, speed and passes that worked for real people on real material. Filter by your machine and laser type, then run a test tile before you commit a full sheet.

These are starting points from community members, not manufacturer specifications. Materials vary between batches and suppliers, machines drift, and lenses get dirty — always test on an offcut first. Never laser PVC, polycarbonate, ABS or any material you can't identify.

Black anodised aluminium1.5mm · Diode

One pass only. A second pass breaks through to bare metal and goes grey.

LP4mark100%20 mm/s1×1000
Cast acrylic (clear)3mm · Diode

Gentle air only — hard airflow frosts the edge and kills the polish.

LX2cut100%6 mm/s1×
Birch plywood3mm · Diode

Single clean pass. Tape both faces to keep edges pale.

LX2cut100%12 mm/s1×
Glass (wet paper coated)Diode

Wet newspaper mask, air assist OFF or the paper dries mid-job.

LP4 Safeguardmark60%42 mm/s1×
Powder-coated tumblerDiode

This is paint removal, not metal marking. Lower power than you'd think.

LP4mark70%120 mm/s1×800
Birch plywood3mm · Diode

Mask with painter's tape and peel while warm — no smoke halo.

LX2engrave35%200 mm/s1×800
Veg-tan leather3.5mm · Diode

Dampen the surface first. Wipe soot off with a damp cloth after.

LP4engrave45%50 mm/s1×800
Cast acrylic (clear)5mm · Diode

Edge-lit signage: shallow and dense. Deep grooves read grey when lit.

LX2engrave25%50 mm/s1×1000
Black anodised aluminium1.5mm · Diode

Photo work with Stucki dither. Compress tonal range before export.

LP4mark100%15 mm/s1×1000
Cast acrylic (clear)5mm · Diode

One slow pass beats three fast ones for edge clarity.

LX2cut100%3 mm/s1×
Natural slate8mm · Diode

Lower DPI than you'd expect — fine lines merge into grey mush.

LP2 Plusengrave100%25 mm/s2×500
Birch plywood6mm · Diode

Two passes beats one slow pass — less charring on the second face.

LX2cut100%5 mm/s2×
Cast acrylic (black)2mm · Diode

Leave top film on, remove bottom film. Kerf 0.15mm.

LP4cut100%9 mm/s1×
Bamboo cutting board15mm · Diode

Sand lightly and oil after. Food-safe oil only.

LP4engrave55%150 mm/s1×1000
Walnut veneer0.6mm · Diode

Laminated to 3mm acrylic. Engrave veneer only, don't reach the glue line.

Coated aluminium business cardDiode

Wipe with IPA before and after — fingerprints show as blotches.

Dark grain hides fine detail — bolder line weights read better.

Basswood2mm · Diode

Great practice material — cheap and forgiving.

Engraves very dark with little power. Start low.

DenimDiode

Bleaching effect, not burning. Very low power, one pass, test on a hem.

LP2engrave25%250 mm/s1×600
Birch plywood3mm · Diode

Slower than the LX2 — check flatness, bowed sheets won't cut through.

LP4cut100%7 mm/s1×
Basswood3mm · Diode

Softer than birch — drop power slightly or edges char.

LP4cut95%9 mm/s1×
Natural slate6mm · Diode

Riven slate varies in height — check flatness or you'll lose focus.

LP4engrave90%30 mm/s1×500
Cardstock 300gsmDiode

Watch for flare-ups. Air assist on, never unattended.

LP2 Safeguardcut45%120 mm/s1×
MDF4mm · Diode

Smells awful and needs real extraction. Edges will be dark, that's normal.

LX2cut100%8 mm/s1×
Cast acrylic (clear)3mm · DiodeLP5cut100%5 mm/s1×
Extruded acrylic3mm · Diode

Cuts fine, engraves badly (dull, not frosty). Use cast for anything visible.

Poplar plywood3mm · Diode

School settings — consistent across three batches of stock.

Ceramic tile (glazed)Diode

Works on light glaze; dark glaze barely marks. Test the exact tile.

LP4 Safeguardmark100%60 mm/s1×800

Open grain takes power unevenly; expect variation between growth rings.
